“Seventeen hikers had a perfect, sunny, 75 degree day to enjoy the grand scenery and gorgeous wildflowers at Ancient and Dusty Lakes last Wednesday, May 9th.  Four chose the easier starting route along with Zoe, and eleven went with John on the more challenging route.  There was plenty of whining as John's group climbed the long scree slope to cross the ridge from Dusty Lake to the Ancient Lakes coulee, but Zoe's group reached the gap in time to sit down and watch us pant and backslide up the slope to meet them.  All were happy with the view when we reached the lunch spot atop the cliff overlooking the Ancient Lakes.  After lunch the entire group chose to complete the 8-mile loop by taking the rocky trail around the lake and climbing out of the valley by the waterfalls.  This proved to be the most challenging part of the hike, but also provided the greatest sense of accomplishment.  We'll have to explore a better return leg for next time, as trudging the long mile-plus back on the road was a let-down after the beauty of the rest of the hike.” – John Roberts
